Why Equipped?

Why Equipped College Consulting, LLC?

I've always done things a bit differently.

Many consultants spend only around 20 hours total with each student throughout the entire admissions process. I don't think that is enough for families who are looking for a comprehensive admissions experience.

I've actually been in admissions groups where other college consultants say things like, "If you're not able to get through the admissions process with a family in 20 hours, you're wasting time or doing something wrong." For many consultants and students, that is completely okay. However, I just choose to take a different approach, based on my own experience working with teens transitioning from high school to college.

Equipped is purposefully designed to better equip students for college by utilizing the admissions process for what it can be: a great opportunity to grow personally, develop better writing/communication skills, and discover more about who they are and what they want. This requires more than just 20 hours.

So, how is Equipped College Consulting different? Glad you asked!

  • I currently accept no more than 10 comprehensive admissions package students for each graduating year.
  • Comprehensive packages include up to 10 hours of admissions prep & current trends education for both teens & their parents (if parents want to attend) before we even start building the college list. (You don't know what you don't know!)
  • Several hours and meetings are devoted to building the best college list for each student instead of sending a one-time, long list of suggestions. Building a college list is a living document, subject to change directions as a student learns more about colleges.
  • Once application season begins, I meet with each student once each week until all their applications are submitted.
  • Essay guidance is discussion-based; 'track changes' is rarely/never used. Essay mentoring often looks more like personalized writing tutoring with critical thinking happening throughout each session. This is Equipped's signature difference and secret to my students' success.

Remember, the ultimate goal is not to 'get in,' but it's actually to 'get out' by successfully graduating college! Throughout the admissions process, I aim to equip students with the skills they need to 'get out.'

Equipped College Consulting offers your teen a third-party trusted adult who is there in your teen's best interest while at the same time walking alongside your family as a partner and guide, equipping you both to make the best decisions for your teen's future.

All Equipped's Comprehensive Packages Include:

  • Timely Insight & Matriculation Essentials (T.I.M.E.) - Equipped's own curriculum that engages students (and their parents) in a discovery of the current landscape of college admissions and enrollment, including trends, results, and the why and how all of this will impact their own situation.

  • A Three-sided Advising Model that mentors the student, teaches critical-thinking-while-writing skills, and guides students through increasing levels of responsibility throughout their admissions process.

  • Consistent, Weekly Meetings from the time students start the application until all applications are submitted

See the Advising Framework page and the College Admissions Consulting page for more details!

In addition, strict ethical guidelines and expectations are always followed. To that end, I do not:

  • Write a student's application or essays for them
  • Make any final decisions for a student/family as to which colleges a student will apply to/ultimately attend
  • Accept any compensation from families for the purpose of getting a student into a specific institution (This is not possible.)
  • Accept any compensation from institutions for the purpose of bringing more applicants to their college (I'm completely independent from all institutions so that I can work in the student's best interest.)
  • Permit a student to apply to only "reach" or "wild card" institutions, where their chance of acceptance is not likely

What Parents are Saying:

My son was very anxious about the college application process. You not only helped him to understand the requirements but also led him to discover himself; I think that’s the essence of college applications. My son is more positive, and confident. Your expertise, patience, and great coaching have been very helpful.
